Can I Run The Lord of The Rings
For many years, fans have dreamed of a large-scale Lord of the Rings MMORPG — an open-world multiplayer game where players could explore Middle-earth together, form fellowships, and experience Tolkien’s world on a massive scale, similar to modern AAA RPGs and MMOs. Need For Speed Undercover Remastered
In 2023, Amazon Games announced plans to develop a new open-world MMO set in Middle-earth, inspired by The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The game was intended to be a persistent online world, allowing thousands of players to adventure simultaneously across iconic regions, encounter legendary creatures, and take part in story-driven quests. It was being developed by the team behind New World and was planned for both PC and consoles.
The project aimed to deliver a modern MMO experience with high production values, deep lore, and social gameplay at its core — effectively the most ambitious Lord of the Rings multiplayer project ever announced.
However, by late 2025, the game was cancelled following major internal restructuring and layoffs at Amazon Games. Development stopped before the project reached full production, and no official title or release date was ever revealed. As a result, the MMO will not be released in its originally envisioned form.
At present, there is no active AAA Lord of the Rings MMORPG in development, leaving The Lord of the Rings Online as the only currently supported multiplayer game set in Tolkien’s universe. Whether Middle-earth will one day receive a new large-scale MMO remains uncertain, but fan interest in such a project remains strong.
